Still overcast and drizzly
Start time: 8:45am; arrived: 3:30pm
We took a slow drive down the mountain as it was still drizzling ever so slightly. Back through the outskirts of Yarram, turned left and headed for Sale where we stopped for mornos. We also called into Bunnings to purchase some "loo juice" - toilet chemicals, and at the dump point which was right at the Info Centre - nice! We met G&Y at a lovely park away from the dump site for mornos.
Through Stratford (on the Avon River) to Bairnsdale where we refuelled simply because it was cheap (we didn't really need to). From there it was onto Lakes Entrance where we stopped for lunch in a car park of what looked like a fishing club and boat ramp. There was also the local skate park. We were going to avail ourselves of the undercover benches, but the wind was blowing a gale, so sat in the van. We remembered the last time we came through LE - just after Greg had his accident in Batemans Bay; the weather was not too dissimilar! We didn't stay for long and were soon on the road heading for Cann River which was to be our overnight stop on the way to Jindabyne to do the walk to Mt Kosciuszko.
WikiCamps had told Wendy that the Cann River Caravan Park was now free as the "caretakers" (from the local pub) were not interested in collecting the fee. When we arrived, the park was about two thirds full and as we were reading a sign on the toilet block that told us to pay at the Pub, an elderly gentleman told us it was free (he had tried ringing the pub, and was told they didn't care. Allegedly, the caretaker was fired and the council had failed to secure a new one that actually cares!). We got sight #22. After setting up, we ventured, on foot, into the town centre of Cann River. It was quite sad really to see so many businesses closed down and the place was looking very sorry for itself.
After a short (5 min) nap, we were up preparing dinner and having pre-dinner drinks. Greg also had his shower in the amenities block which was spotless when we arrived, so someone must still be cleaning the place. It started to rain just as we were finishing pre-dinner drinks and that put an end to the cooking outside deal. Lucky it was only left over mince and vege, so all Wendy had to do was cook pasta and green vege. We watched the 6pm News as dinner was cooking/heating. Not long after doing the dishes, G&Y came over with four caramel dumplings given to them by their neighbour on the other side. They shared them with us and for something cooked in a caravan, they were a delight. Probably a bit too sweet to be eating at night, but Wendy did it anyway. Greg saved his for the next day as he had already brushed his teeth.
