Day 31: Thu 2 Feb - Marcus Hill

Cloudy and cool to sunny and pleasant

Cycle: 61.5km

We had a little sleep in, as Gunther wanted to check out Kev & Jo's caravan as their fridge was doing the same is ours was. He found the problem and was able to apply a quick fix. We then had mornos and made a sandwich for lunch on the road.

Google Maps told us it was only 18km to Geelong (cycling) but it turned out to be 30km!! We also did it into a screaming headwind which we thought would be fantastic on the way home. We made it to Geelong and had lunch on the foreshore (Gunther dropped his and had a gravel encrusted sandwich until he gave up and gave it to the seagulls). We then rode around the wharf area and back again to a FroYo and Ice Creamery. Wendy had ice-cream, whilst the other three had FroYo.

We returned via the non-city route as G&Y were not as comfortable with the traffic as we were (cycling in Indochina kind of cures you of that), and also bypassed the train-smash of rail crossings you have to negotiate on the rail trail. We did have a tailwind for about half way and then the wind turned - not quite head on, but almost. It was head down and bum up to get home. The last 3 km were the worst with a headwind from hell and a monster hill to climb. We all made it home to tell the tale, which is the main thing.

A relax after the ride, then Greg played tennis with Kev&Jo and Wendy snoozed; not for long though as she had to shower and shave legs before dinner. There was no time for pre-dinner drinks as we were off to the Ocean Grove Bowls Club (about 8km away). As we had not booked we had to eat either in the sports bar or restaurant. We tried the bar first and it smelt heavily of smoke so went to the restaurant knowing it was going to be a tad more expensive. It was full table service though, which we did not take up. Greg had the duck dish and Wendy had a steak; both meals were delicious and were washed down with a SA Sav Blanc (Barefoot).

Upon returning to the vans, we all gathered at the Fischer's house for post-dinner drinks. Bed followed soon after.
