Day 24: Thu 26 Jan - Portland

Another fine but cool day
Walk: 10.5km

We walked down to the park to participate in the Australia Day celebrations and availed ourselves of the free coffee and breakfast of bacon and egg rolls and a sausage.  We witnessed the Citizenship awards and speeches.  Wendy was quite indignant as when she and her family were granted Citizenship they didn’t get a fluffy toy – these people got a fluffy kangaroo, dolphin or koala!!  The programme was marred somewhat by a bunch of protesting indigenous folk who saw fit to throw insults at anybody and anything, just because they could – very unpleasant.

After the official part of the celebrations were over, we took a stroll through the Botanical Gardens which are quite extensive and very well kept.  It was then time to make our way back home but first we walked along the Lee Breakwater which is quite a long wall/pier/jetty.

After a lighter than usual lunch and a snooze, it was time to attend to the domestic chores such as taking the washing off the line, grocery shopping, and then a bit of R&R.  As it was a Thursday night, we chose the Royal Hotel for our dinner venue.  All the meals were large and good.  Thankfully we had walked there so had to walk home and that settled the dinner very nicely.  It was still light when we got home so we had a post dinner drink and chat while Gunther fixed their washing machine.
